Hadi Malijani (b. 1989, Shiraz, Iran) is a self-taught fine-art photographer working at the intersection of minimalist surrealism and conceptual portraiture. Raised near the Zagros mountain range, Malijani began his photographic practice at the age of eighteen and has since developed a distinct visual language built on absence, silence, and restraint.

His work is a meditation on subtraction: subjects are isolated from the noise of reality and placed within deliberate negative space, where they exist not as documentary evidence but as philosophical symbols. Every shadow, every line, and every omission is a considered choice — a visual poem in which the viewer is invited to complete the meaning. This process of removal, rather than addition, defines Malijani’s artistic identity and distinguishes his practice within contemporary conceptual photography.

Malijani’s formative influences trace back to his childhood — watching his mother and grandmother hand-weave Persian carpets, absorbing their geometric patterns, animal motifs, and symbolic compositions. That early exposure to structured visual storytelling, combined with a lifelong engagement with the poetry of Khayyam and Rumi, continues to inform the rhythm and symbolism present in his photographic work today.

Working from Iran under significant logistical and creative constraints, Malijani has built an international body of work recognized across Europe, Russia, and Germany, and by global institutions including the Sony World Photography Awards. His photographs have been acquired and championed by internationally recognized cultural figures, including composer Zbigniew Preisner and vocalist Lisa Gerrard.
